Happy 70th Anniversary Varsteel Ltd.

Letter from Gerald W. Varzari, President/CEO

I am extremely proud to announce that this year marks the 70th Anniversary of Varsteel Ltd.  It is a mark of resiliency, innovation, and vision.  This is an extraordinary and significant milestone that few companies achieve, and I am pleased to celebrate this landmark year with each of you.

Seventy years ago, we opened our doors in Lethbridge and since then we have been on a transformational journey.  Today, as I reflect on our history, I am reminded that we began as a small “mom & pop” scrap business with one single location in Lethbridge, and we have expanded to over thirty-two locations in Canada and the United States.  We have over 800 dedicated Varsteel team members and we have an immensely diverse range of product lines.  We have risen to stand tall amongst our competitors and I am proud to say, we are one of the most dedicated and respected companies in the steel industry.  This dedication has propelled us from our humble beginnings to a modern and efficient steel distribution company.

The only constant in our industry is change and every day I am learning something new.  For that reason, we are continuously expanding our network of Varsteel Companies, increasing our manufacturing footprint, and positioning ourselves for continuous growth … because age is nothing in business without the wisdom to evolve and transform.

Our journey has been an exciting one but not without challenges and pitfalls along the way.  However, our end-goal has never wavered, and that is to provide the best possible product and service to our customers.

Over the years we have celebrated countless achievements and accomplishments and last year proved to be exceptionally productive for our Company. Clearly our success and longevity would not have been possible without the support of our excellent team of employees.  I thank every member of our Varsteel team, for their resilience, commitment, and incredible talent over the years.  As we say in our mission statement …. We are “Powered by our People”!

We highly value the business relationships we have nurtured over the years and the trust our customers place in us.  To our customers who continue to select and trust Varsteel and who rely on our proven record of impeccable products and service … we THANK YOU!  We are grateful for your business, and we look forward to our continued relationships.  We remain committed to providing you with nothing but the best products and service.

Although much has changed over the years, so many things remain the same and will never change.  We conduct our business ethically and fairly, we are genuinely concerned for the well-being of our employees, and we give back to the communities where we do business.  As we embark on the next phase of our journey, we will honour those principles that led to our success.

Join us as we celebrate this remarkable milestone and the incredible accomplishments of the past seven decades and know that we are all part of that history making.

As I look to the future beyond these 70 years, I ask myself one question …

What’s Next?    And … I am filled with optimism !!

Happy Anniversary Varsteel    …….   We are 70 YEARS STRONG !

Varsteel helps Ukrainian refugees

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Murray Pobran, the general manager at Varsteel in Saskatoon, knew he wanted to do something.

“I went to the president and CEO and explained how close to home this was hitting for me being of Ukrainian descent and with several of my friends, family and coworkers being Ukrainian. He asked if I thought there was any way we could help,” Pobran told CTV News.

From there the process started to get the word out that the company was hiring Ukrainians coming to Saskatoon.

With the help of social media, he says Yaroslav Kravchuk and Vova Rybachenko contacted Varsteel for a job.

Rybachenko is an English as a Second Language teacher in Ukraine and was impressed by the quick reply he received to his application.

“I was surprised by the response, it was very fast and positive,” Rybachenko says.

He is waiting for his family to join him in Canada so he can help them get settled in Saskatoon.

Yaroslav Kravchuk, also a displaced Ukrainian hired at Varsteel, says the settlement process has gone well for him and his wife, mother-in-law and three young children despite still recovering from the trauma and shock of fleeing their home in Kyiv.

“When we left it was horrible. The first night was horrible, the second night, we were sleeping in the cellar of our apartment building,” Kravchuk told CTV News.

Varsteel helped Kravchuk with an apartment for his family, with the rental company offering free rent for two months. Gift cards have been provided by management and staff at Varsteel and assistance was given to help reimburse them for their flights to get to Canada.

Like many industries, theirs is finding a shortage of skilled reliable workers, according to Pobran, so hiring displaced Ukrainians is proving to be mutually beneficial.

The two newest employees say they’ve gained a sense of belonging.

“We are thankful to the company that adopted us and they’re brave enough to hire people from far away. I do feel like we are part of the company and part of the family,” Rybachenko said.

Varsteel operates in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba. The plan is to hire dozens more workers to fit the requirements in all locations, building on the success in Saskatoon.

The company says the men are being paid the same wage as other employees at Varsteel and are not replacing Canadian workers, and the company also continues to recruit local Canadian employees.
